This graphic was originally inspired by an African Modern Graphic design style. We wanted to find something that had bold modern line work, was colourful and attractive on street poles, and something that referenced the geometric design quality of a lot of our great African design heritage. For this approach, we also wanted to find a way to integrate the festival logo (the stylised film reel) into the design. You can see how these elements all come together through the animated title sequence in the video above.
We explored a number of different colour options and graphic iterations until we landed on the final version that made it’s way onto the street.
We also did a large portion of the design work on the festival’s website as well as the award design picture below.
We were briefed to design the film festival award for 2024. A project that we were very stoked to get involved in and we had great fun with it. The awards were produced by The Maker Space.
The design is a continuation of the poster graphic and we wanted to show the strong geometric shapes and hard diagonal composition. The design was realised through the process of combining a CNC-cut oak wood base with a cast patterned head. The head was originally 3D printed in 2 parts and then a mould was created, it was then cast with an aluminium & resin compound. The cast compound gets sanded down to reveal the metal below.
Award details were laser cut into the wood base.
